Water is the driving force of all life and is essential for the sustenance of our food systems, ecosystems, and planet at large. However, according to the European Commission, only 39.5% of EU surface water bodies are achieving good ecological status, and only 26.8% are achieving good chemical status. Globally, the water crisis disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable communities, which is why urgent action is needed to improve water security.

The mismanagement of water resources not only contributes to the climate crisis, but also impacts biodiversity, economic growth, and competitiveness. Farmers play a crucial role in addressing these challenges, as sustainable farming practices can help mitigate climate change, enhance water retention, and restore ecosystems. They can also further contribute by adopting sustainable practices that enhance soil water retention, reduce pollution, and protect freshwater resources.

As water, climate, people and nature are all interconnected. The EU is currently working on developing a comprehensive multi-annual cross-sectoral plan in the form of the European Water Resilience Strategy. This aims to establish a path towards water security and resilience, and combating issues such as climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss.

At a global level, investments in improving water security in supply chains, access to clean water, regenerative agriculture, and reforestation are some solutions considered by stakeholders in order to improve climate resiliency and enable future growth.

Join this Euractiv Stakeholder Workshop to discuss what urgent actions can be taken to improve water security globally and what role the EU can play. Questions to be addressed include:

- How can the Water Resilience Strategy maximise benefits for the planet and the people?
- What is the best circular economy approach that could be applied to water cycles and sources? How can waste water recycling play a role in this?
- What scope is there for public-private partnerships to address water scarcity and manage water resources? What roles do investment and innovation play in increasing water reuse and circularity?
- How can commitment and cooperation be strengthened between the sectors that rely on water?
