Smart Energy, Stronger Europe - How can smart energy management unlock the potential of the built environment

Smart energy management sits at the heart of Europe’s green and digital transition. Recent energy crises have exposed the structural vulnerabilities of Europe’s energy system, highlighting the urgent need to reduce demand and improve efficiency while accelerating the deployment of distributed energy sources and electrification. With buildings accounting for a significant portion of EU energy consumption, unlocking their potential as active, flexible components of the energy system is critical to reducing emissions, lowering costs, and strengthening resilience. This policy event will explore how Europe can accelerate the deployment of smart energy management in the built environment, addressing key regulatory, market and implementation challenges.

Delivering Europe’s green and digital transformation requires more than incremental efficiency gains. Buildings must evolve into integrated, responsive assets that can actively contribute to managing energy demand, supporting electrification, and enhancing system stability, especially in times of market stress or supply disruption. At the same time, the digitalisation of the built environment introduces new requirements around cybersecurity, interoperability and system resilience, which are increasingly recognised as core elements of Europe’s energy and economic security framework.

In this context, open and interoperable approaches to building automation and energy management are emerging as critical enablers. They can help avoid market fragmentation, reduce deployment costs, and ensure that solutions remain adaptable to different building types, user needs and local energy systems. The discussion will focus on how policy and regulatory frameworks can better support the deployment of interoperable, secure and future-proof solutions, including through standardisation, procurement practices and market design. It will also examine how Europe can strengthen its industrial and innovation base to deliver these solutions at scale, in line with broader competitiveness and strategic autonomy objectives.

The event will provide a platform to discuss how open standards like KNX can accelerate Europe’s transition to a more energy-efficient, resilient, and digitally sovereign built environment—setting a benchmark for global action.
