Unlocking Industrial Electrification - The EU Electrification Action Plan

Electrification is a key component of the European Commission's strategy to decarbonise the EU's industrial sector. However, electricity only accounts for a quarter of our energy mix in Europe. In that context, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote in a Mission Letter that the Commission “will propose an Electrification Action Plan to ensure that Europe's industrial transition towards net zero is powered by an energy system with homegrown, clean electricity.”

Building an electrified industry will be critical to both decarbonise our economy and deliver climate-neutrality. Electrification can also help build a more competitive EU industrial sector: heat pumps, for instance, are at least three times more efficient than classic fossil fuel boilers.

Industries requiring low temperature heat could electrify rapidly, while energy-intensive industries offer significant opportunities in the mid-long term, but require supporting infrastructures and financing. As the EU seeks to reduce its dependency on external energy sources, electrification will play a key role in Europe’s industrial transformation. Achieving this will depend on policy support and on addressing existing economic and technical barriers.

Join this Euractiv Hybrid Conference to discuss the potential of industrial electrification. Questions to be discussed include:

- How can electrification accelerate the industrial transition while supporting European competitiveness?
- How can the EU address the current barriers to electrification?
- What specific policies or legislative actions are needed at the EU level to accelerate industrial electrification, and how can they align with existing frameworks?
- How can we foster research and innovation in sectors where electrification is not yet feasible?
- How does the EU plan to finance the implementation of its electrification initiatives?
