Fit for flexibility? - How to uncover the potential of storage, grids and flexible generation

Please note that this event was held in person only.

The EU energy system of the future, primarily powered by variable renewables, demands a high degree of flexibility. Both power generation and consumption must be responsive to grid and market signals to avoid blackouts and ensure affordable electricity prices. The accelerated phase-out of fossil fuel baseload generation significantly cuts greenhouse gas emissions and reduces dependence on imported fuels. However, it also removes a key source of reliable, dispatchable capacity. At the same time, electricity demand patterns are shifting due to the electrification of transport, heating, and industrial processes. It is therefore argued that traditional management tools are no longer sufficient for this evolving system.

To address this challenge, advanced flexibility solutions must be developed to enable rapid adjustments in both generation and consumption. A diverse mix of energy storage technologies, demand-side response measures, and grid-enhancing innovations are needed. These tools not only strengthen system resilience and efficiency but also help lower electricity prices by smoothing out peak demand and generation periods. Managing energy flows and variable supply also requires sector-coupling solutions and all kinds of energy storage technologies including battery storage and hydro-pumped facilities as well. Additionally, dispatchable generation remains crucial to quickly meet fluctuations in demand. Flexibility must be leveraged more effectively to ensure energy security.

Join this Euractiv Stakeholder Workshop to discuss technological and regulatory approaches that can support the flexibility of the EU energy system. Questions to be discussed include:

- How can energy storage support both system security and market stability?
- What investment signals and support schemes are needed to support storage projects across the EU?
- How can flexibility and storage be integrated into the upcoming Electrification Action Plan or Green Deal Industrial Plan?
