Harnessing the Wind: The Future of Offshore Energy in the Baltic Sea

Empowering Europe for a Sustainable and Secure Future

Polska Grupa Energetyczna, leading polish energy utility and Ørsted, global leader in offshore wind are pleased to invite you to an event showcasing the impact of offshore wind energy in this transition and to celebrate the recent Final Investment Decision on Baltica 2—the largest renewable energy project in Poland’s modern history. Developed by PGE and Ørsted, this landmark wind farm represents a major step forward for both Poland and Europe. The meeting is held as part of the Poland EU Council Presidency.

This event will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of offshore wind energy. The participants will discuss how enhanced transnational cooperation can strengthen the EU energy system resilience and improve energy security. The upcoming Clean Industrial Deal and the Action Plan on Affordable Energy rightly emphasize the importance of expanding domestic renewable energy to strengthen European energy security and drive economic growth. The event will provide real life examples of strategic considerations that regulators need to consider to facilitate the smooth development of offshore wind at scale in Europe and its integration of offshore wind projects into the existing power system.

Offshore wind is an important energy source – now and in the future. And both nations are front-runners in developing European offshore capacity. Denmark was the first to invest in offshore wind. Today the country has 3 GW of offshore wind capacity – generating 24% of Denmark's electricity demand. Poland is on its transition pathway, mitigating its dependence from fossil fuels and enhancing its energy security with the pipeline of 18GW of offshore wind.

The meeting presents a unique opportunity to discuss challenges and opportunities for offshore wind and its role for the European energy security, and European economic development and hear the voice of politicians as well as the offshore wind industry.

Questions for discussion:

- How the current geopolitical context and regional dynamics influence the development of offshore wind farms in Europe?
- How to ensure the affordability of offshore wind energy so that it can contribute to stable and lower energy prices for consumers?
- How to support development of European supply chain fpr offshore wind and strengthen its role for Europe green industrialisation
- How can offshore wind farms contribute to energy security and grid stability in the EU?
- How offshore wind projects affect local communities, including opportunities for local businesses and community involvement?
- What regulatory improvements are needed to overcome the challenges faced by offshore wind projects in the current context?
