The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), in force since July 2024, sets out a framework to improve the environmental performance of a wide range of products across the EU. It will introduce performance and information requirements focused on durability, energy efficiency, recyclability, and circularity.

Repealing the Ecodesign Directive, ESPR significantly broadens the scope of requirements and includes a wider range of product groups, such as textiles, electronics, furniture, and tyres, supporting the EU’s efforts to reduce waste and increase resource efficiency within a harmonised single market.

As ESPR requirements expand, several cross-cutting challenges emerge, including regulatory coherence, technical feasibility, and market readiness for recycled materials. In this context, developing clear, harmonised end-of-waste criteria is also important to facilitate the uptake of secondary raw materials across sectors.

Tyres are one of the products prioritised for first action under ESPR due to their strong potential for circular use. With existing systems in place for collection, recycling, and retreading, tyres offer an example of how design and end-of-life management can align with circular economy goals. Retreadingcan extend product life, reduce raw material consumption, and lower emissions. Efforts are also underway to incorporate more recycled and renewable materials into new tyreshighlighting opportunities and challenges relevant to ESPR implementation.

Join this Euractiv Stakeholder Workshop to discuss the implementation of the ESPR and how circular design, reuse, and recycling can be effectively applied across product categories. Questions to be discussed include:

· How can ESPR requirements be effectively tailored to different product categories?

· What policy and market mechanisms can support investment in circular design and reuse systems?

· How can regulatory overlaps be avoided, particularly in areas like remanufacturing and labelling?

· How can ESPR support circularity in tyre design and end-of-life management?
