#eaAgriFood Twitter Chat | Green Deal and farming - Divorce or happy ever after?
29-11-2023
Unveiled in May 2020, the EU’s flagship Farm to Fork strategy was presented as a key pillar of the Green Deal with the aim of contributing to more sustainable food systems in Europe. Disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have led to a change of course in the EU’s agricultural policy.
When Commission president Ursula von der Leyen called on a new ‘strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture’, some interpreted it as an attempt to put on pause the Farm to Fork, others as a way to move on to a new completely different chapter.
The fact that none of the remaining Farm to Fork files have been included in the EU Executive’s working programme for 2024 seemed to confirm stakeholders’ worst fears that these proposals will not see the light of day before next June’s EU elections.
With the Green Deal at a crossroads, the question of what path will EU agricultural policy after the EU elections has started to arise.
Join our Agrifood team on Wednesday 29 November 2023 between 12:30 and 1:30 to discuss this and more in this Euractiv’s Twitter Chat.
Our Twitter account @eaAgriFood will share the following questions on Twitter and invite you to share responses using #eaAgriFood:
Q1. With EU elections approaching in half a year, how optimistic you are that Green Deal files on agri-food still pending will be brought to a good, if any, conclusion?
Q2. Do you see the ‘strategic dialogue on the future of agriculture’ proposed by Commission president von der Leyen as a turn away from the Farm to Fork strategy, or as a complement?
Q3. Looking back at this legislative mandate characterised by the Green Deal, what is one thing you think went well in agriculture policymaking, and one that went wrong?
Q4. How will Ukraine’s path to EU membership shape future EU agriculture policy? What will it mean for the Common Agriculture Policy and its budget?
Q5. What direction do you expect EU agriculture policy to take after the elections?
