European standards are a key component of the Single Market. They support innovation, market access, and the implementation of EU legislation by translating policy objectives into practical technical solutions. As the EU seeks to strengthen its competitiveness, leadership, and technological sovereignty, policymakers are reviewing the Standardisation Regulation 1025/2012 as part of the broader European Product Act package, alongside revisions to the New Legislative Framework and the Market Surveillance Regulation.

The debate comes at a pivotal moment where standardisation is moving from a technical policy file to a strategic question for Europe’s industrial future. The revised Regulation offers an opportunity to guarantee that Europe remains the global standard setter and ensure that the European standardisation system is responsive, inclusive, and more digital, while ensuring access and legal certainty in the standards that underpin the Single Market.

In parallel, CEN and CENELEC and their Members agreed on a long-term vision which they claim will make European standardisation faster to connect, easier to use digitally, and closer to innovation, regulation and application, while preserving consensus, inclusiveness, technical excellence, national participation and trust.
