Europe’s industry at a crossroads - Can deindustrialisation still be resisted?

Please note that this event is in-person only.

Europe is at a critical crossroads. A recent Syndex report* shows that across 18 key industrial sectors, only aerospace and defence remain globally competitive, while the rest face stalled investment, restructuring and growing uncertainty. The report suggests that without urgent action, Europe risks accelerated deindustrialisation, deepening dependency on external suppliers and the loss of millions of good industrial jobs.

The report makes clear that industrial decline is not inevitable – it is a political choice. It states that while global competitors are surging ahead, Europe is increasingly playing an uneven game, caught between the United States’ large-scale industrial support and protectionism, and China’s state-backed strategic planning. At the same time, Europe continues to rely on open markets, low tariffs and fiscal restraint precisely when its industrial base needs to be rebuilt to deliver the green and digital transitions.

The report concludes that Europe’s industries now require a decisive strategic shift. This means urgent investment, a proactive industrial policy, fair trade rules and strong social and environmental conditionalities. The report opines that Europe’s workers are clear: without factories there is no transition, and without good jobs there is no sustainable industry. It urges it's time to resist deindustrialisation and act now.

Join this Euractiv Stakeholder Workshop to discuss how the EU can safeguard its industrial base, unlock investment and manage industrial transformation in a way that delivers economic resilience, social cohesion and climate ambition. Questions to be discussed include:

• How can Europe respond to intensifying global competition and avoid deindustrialisation while preserving and rebuilding its industrial capacity?
• Which policy choices at EU and national level are most critical to unlock investment and support a fair green and digital industrial transformation?
• How can industrial change be anticipated and managed so that innovation, skills development, quality jobs and regional cohesion are strengthened rather than undermined?
