European airlines remain central to Europe’s connectivity and global competitiveness. Yet, the sector faces an increasingly complex operating environment, geopolitical instability, energy market volatility, and evolving travel demand. Higher fuel costs, disproportionate airport charges, air traffic controller disruptions, and border security delays are also adding further pressure. This all raises serious questions about Europe’s ability to maintain its position as a leading global destination and hub while maintaining the cost of flying for passengers.

The regulatory framework is also evolving rapidly. The upcoming EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) for aviation risks exacerbating geopolitical tensions, adding further costs for European passengers without ensuring revenues are invested back in aviation decarbonisation. At the same time, the SAF market is not developing at the pace required to support aviation decarbonisation, while non-European competitors operate without comparable obligations.
