As Europe moves toward cleaner transport, public electric vehicle (EV) charging is becoming a crucial part of everyday mobility. But drivers still face major barriers: unclear pricing, limited accessibility, and a mix of charging systems that don’t always work together. These challenges slow adoption and undermine driver confidence.

Making charging simple, reliable, and user-friendly is essential to encourage more people to choose EVs, and to support Europe’s transition to sustainable mobility.

A new FIA Region I study conducted by RICARDO explores how Europe is expanding its charging network, testing innovative business models, and introducing smart features like “plug and charge.” This solution lets drivers connect and start charging automatically: no apps, no cards, no hassle.

The study also highlights key ongoing challenges:

- Grid-connection delays and capacity issues
- Transparent, easy-to-understand pricing for all users
- Infrastructure that is inclusive and accessible (for people with reduced mobility, rural communities, and drivers of different vehicle types)
