How can the EU rapidly decarbonise heavy-duty road transport?

Trucks and buses are not just bigger cars. They differ not only by their size and weight but also by their individuality. They serve a myriad of uses, often tailored to the specific needs of logistics and public transport operators. For instance, long-haul trucks are completely different from trucks that collect garbage, operate a crane, or extinguish fires.

Trucks also play a critical role in constructing and maintaining Europe’s green infrastructure, significantly supporting the decarbonisation of various sectors. Without heavy-duty road transport, infrastructure critical to achieving climate neutrality, such as charging networks, renewable energy installations, and wind turbines, could not be established.

Truck and bus manufacturers have committed to go fossil-free by 2040 in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. They are investing heavily in and scaling up production of battery-electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. However, achieving these objectives requires suitable ‘enabling conditions’. Without these, transport operators are unlikely to adopt new vehicle technologies.

Industry stakeholders highlight the need for stable, long-term planning and supportive measures, essential for transport operators to make investment decisions confidently. They ask policymakers to match ambitious goals for truck and bus manufacturers with equally robust frameworks that facilitate the uptake of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).

Join this Euractiv event to discuss the way forward in decarbonising heavy duty road transport. Questions to be discussed include:

- What are the primary challenges that truck manufacturers face in meeting market demand for ZEVs? How can conditions for rapid market uptake of zero-emission trucks and buses be established?
- How can policymakers implement the right conditions to foster a sustainable transport industry?
- What progress has been made on infrastructure essential to achieving carbon-neutral heavy transport, including charging stations and hydrogen refuelling facilities?
