Europe’s CRM supply chain: from raw materials to steel to automotive - How can we increase the EU’s resilience?

The automotive industry is the largest consumer of critical raw materials (CRMs) due to a wide variety of applications. One of the important components are specialised steels. Advanced High-Strength Steels (AHSS) and stainless steels play a role in driving innovation and sustainability, particularly for lightweighting, improving fuel efficiency and enhancing safety and performance and require CRMs. Once the steel has been used and has reached its end of life it is being recycled again with the help of CRMs. To strengthen Europe's competitiveness and meet the objectives of the EU Green Steel Transformation, ensuring a resilient, home-grown supply of CRMs for steel and the automotive industry is important.
A sustainable supply of CRMs is important to align supply chain security with technological innovation and environmental targets, ensuring the viability of this transformation and also to ensure circularity for which again CRMs are required.
The EU's CRM Act, Net Zero Act, and the new Clean Industry Act are key frameworks for supporting resilient supply chains for the steel and automotive sectors. These policies should enable secure CRM sourcing and accelerate the green transition across industries. Achieving a low-carbon industrial ecosystem in Europe requires a unified approach to fostering innovation, securing resources, and meeting sustainability goals.
Join this event to discuss the way to achieve resilience for the CRM supply chain for steel and automotive. Questions to be discussed include:
- How can Europe ensure a sustainable and competitive supply of CRMs for the automotive sector?
- How can European steel producers achieve climate-neutrality while ensuring resilience in the face of global competition?
- How can the CRM Act, Net Zero Act, and Clean Industry Act work together to support the EU’s green and industrial ambitions?
