#EAPOLITICS TWITTER CHAT | HOW WELL DO YOU THINK DISCRIMINATION BASED ON RACIAL OR ETHNIC ORIGIN IS COVERED IN THE MEDIA?

Join us for an online debate with EURACTIV journalist Alexandra Brzozowski, held completely on Twitter on Thursday, 29th October.

Our Twitter account @eaPolitics will be discussing “How well do you think discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin is covered in the media?” - including questions for participants to answer via their own Twitter accounts.

The EU has put in place sufficient legislation to tackle what is still a perceived and a real problem in our societies – discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin. However, discrimination is not simply a legal issue, but a societal one. There are gaps in effective implementation of non-discrimination legislation in Member States; poor awareness of rights, bodies and redress mechanisms; unclear understanding of what discrimination really means and an insufficient media coverage.

The media has a unique platform to raise awareness of non-discrimination – and more importantly to lead a necessary discussion by setting good practices and informing the public of their rights.

The questions @eaPolitics will be asking are:

Q1 - Do you think discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin in Europe receives adequate media attention?

Q2 - What are effective ways to combat stereotypes in media coverage of discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin – particularly using the tools available to the media?

Q3 - What could promote a more accurate representation of minority communities as a whole?

Q4 - How best to ensure and support media awareness for discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin?

Q5 - Should there be a uniform regulatory standard that covers all forms of media?

What is a Twitter chat, and how do you join?

A Twitter Chat is a discussion between Twitter users that get online at a pre-arranged date and time to discuss a specific topic using a designated #hashtag (for this chat it’s #eaPolitics). The hashtag links the questions and answers in a virtual conversation.

As the host of the Twitter Chat, @eaPolitics will post questions identified as Q1, Q2 and so on, to prompt answers from participants, which are identified as A1, A2 and so on. We will moderate the answers and ask follow up questions to participants. Please be sure to use the #eaPolitics when answering the questions.

The Twitter Chat will last about an hour. The best way to see the entire conversation is to search for the hashtag #eaPolitics on twitter and switch to the "latest tweets" tab.
