#EAPOLITICS TWITTER CHAT | EU NON-DISCRIMINATION LAW, A PAPER TIGER?

Join us for an online debate with EURACTIV journalist Alexandra Brzozowski, held completely on Twitter on Thursday, 18th February.

Our Twitter account @eaPolitics will be discussing “EU non-discrimination law, a paper tiger?” - including questions for participants to answer via their own Twitter accounts.

The EU has put in place legislation to tackle what is still a perceived and a real problem in our societies – discrimination based on racial or ethnic origin. However, is it simply a paper tiger? Is it actual effective? What can be done to increase the pace of implementing a EU-wide principle of equal treatment?

The questions @eaPolitics will be asking are:

Q1. What do you think about the European Commission's promise to expand the list of 'Eurocrimes'?

Q2. The European Commission’s 2008 anti-discrimination directive, that would have transposed the principal of equal treatment into EU law, has been stuck with member states. What is preventing us from having an EU-wide legislation implementing the principle of equal treatment?

Q3. A decade ago, the Commission launched an EU platform to support companies, public institutions and nonprofit organisations in putting diversity, inclusion and solidarity at the core of their activities through “diversity charters.” Do you think these have been effective in fighting ethnic discrimination in the work place?

Q4. Ethnic minorities have fewer chances of getting through the recruitment process. Do member states ensure that everyone has equal access to the labour market?

Q5. Data by the Fundamental Rights Agency suggests that ethnic minorities do not report ethnically motivated crimes perpetrated against them. What should the EU do to ensure they are reported?

What is a Twitter chat, and how do you join?

A Twitter Chat is a discussion between Twitter users that get online at a pre-arranged date and time to discuss a specific topic using a designated #hashtag (for this chat it’s #eaPolitics). The hashtag links the questions and answers in a virtual conversation.

As the host of the Twitter Chat, @eaPolitics will post questions identified as Q1, Q2 and so on, to prompt answers from participants, which are identified as A1, A2 and so on. We will moderate the answers and ask follow up questions to participants. Please be sure to use the #eaPolitics when answering the questions.

The Twitter Chat will last about an hour. The best way to see the entire conversation is to search for the hashtag #eaPolitics on twitter and switch to the "latest tweets" tab.
