Media Partnership - Convenience, Nutrition, Health: Can Europe Have It All?

Obesity and overweight rates continue to rise across Europe, despite decades of policy efforts and public health campaigns. Today, more than half of EU adults are overweight, one in six are classified as obese. This growing challenge demands a fresh approach, integrating consumer behaviour, nutrition innovation and evidence-based policy.

This roundtable, hosted in partnership with Euractiv, will explore how smarter food systems and targeted nutritional strategies can support healthier lifestyles and contribute meaningfully to EU health objectives. The event will feature the findings of the Strive study which underscores the limitations of calorie counting. Even with access to professional nutritionists, many individuals struggle to manage their diets effectively. As consumer behaviour is evolving, there is growing demand for food compatible with today’s lifestyles, i.e. convenient, nutritious and tasty. This event will explore innovative approaches that have proven successful in recent studies achieving sustainable weight management.

The discussion aims to connect the findings and the topics to upcoming EU policy revision and proposals. The EU Cardiovascular Health Plan, for example, offers opportunities for a holistic approach to combatting obesity and overweight.

Moreover, as GLP-1 agonist weight loss drugs become more widely adopted, the importance of complementary nutrition and lifestyle interventions grows—both to help individuals sustain weight loss over time and to ensure balanced nutrient intake throughout their health journey.

Join policymakers, researchers, consumer advocates and industry leaders for a timely and forward-looking conversation on how Europe can turn the tide on obesity through systemic innovation and smarter nutrition strategies.

Key themes will include:

· The persistent and increasing challenge of obesity and overweight in Europe and how to address it.

· The role of nutrient density and food formulation in public health.

· Behavioural barriers to healthy eating and how to overcome them.

· Opportunities for EU policy to support food innovation.

· How the EU Cardiovascular Health Plan could offer a possible approach to combatting obesity and overweight.

· Aligning food systems with consumer demand for convenience, affordability and health.
