A one-size-fits-all approach to critical medicines cannot reflect the complexity and diversity of today’s pharmaceutical supply chains. On October 1, 2025, the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association (PPTA) will host a panel discussion at Comet Louise in Brussels, titled "As Critical as They Are Different: How Can Over 270 Medicines Fit into the ONE Critical Medicines Act". This event will focus on how the Critical Medicines Act (CMA) can account for these differences —highlighting plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs) as a key example of why tailored approaches are essential to ensure reliable and timely patient access in the European Union.
The Critical Medicines Act (CMA) aims to improve the availability, supply, and production of critical medicines in the EU. Among these are plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs), which treat rare conditions such as bleeding disorders, immune deficiencies, neurological diseases, and other conditions such as Rh incompatibility in pregnancy, burns and trauma.
Most plasma-derived medicines are included in the Union’s List of Critical Medicines. Human plasma is a critical starting material that can only be sourced from healthy donors and cannot be manufactured in a laboratory. This unique characteristic of the plasma supply chain demands tailored approaches to ensure medicine availability for patients.
To address these challenges, the CMA must consider the diversity and complexity of pharmaceutical supply chains. In this panel, leading experts from the healthcare and policy sectors will discuss how the legislation can ensure flexibility for different classes of medicines rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach to all critical medicines.
Timed just ahead of International Plasma Awareness Week (IPAW), this pivotal discussion will bring together key stakeholders to exchange views and proposals on strengthening medicines supply chains and safeguarding uninterrupted patient access across the EU.
