Established in 1993, the Single Market remains a cornerstone of the European Union, enabling the free movement of goods, services, people and capital. It has simplified the daily life of businesses and consumers, fueling jobs and economic growth across Europe.
To support the Single Market, the European Commission is currently revising the New Legislative Framework (NLF), initially adopted in 2008 to improve market surveillance and boost the quality of conformity assessments. Market surveillance is crucial for the smooth functioning of the Single Market, ensuring that non-food products on the EU market are safe for consumers and workers. However, some stakeholders call for stronger and more modern enforcement of market surveillance.
Yet, despite progress, the Single Market remains fragmented, limiting its potential. In the context of shifting geoeconomic dynamics, analysts also point to remaining barriers, lack of integration of services, and inadequate investment in research, education, and skills.
To promote a more resilient Single Market, the European Commission also launched its standardisation strategy in February 2022. European standards promote safety, quality, innovation, and efficiency for consumers, supporting competitiveness, innovation, and international trade.
Join this Euractiv Stakeholder Workshop to discuss the future of the Single Market and the role of European standards. Questions to be addressed include:
• How can market surveillance frameworks be made more resilient to support the Single Market and ensure compliance?
• In what ways can standardisation improve cross-border trade and reduce barriers for businesses and consumers?
• How can public-private partnerships be leveraged to integrate European standardisation more effectively across industries?
• What can we expect from the upcoming European Commission’s revision of the New Legislative Framework?
